Suspension setup: the five changes that actually matter

Ride height, shock oil, spring rate, droop and camber. Get these five right and almost any RC car will feel twice as fast.

Most people buy a faster motor when what they actually need is a better setup. A well-tuned 1:10 buggy on a 27T brushed motor will beat a badly set up brushless car around almost any real track, because lap time comes from grip, not top speed.

Start with ride height. Measure it with the car sitting on a flat surface, battery installed, and set the front 2-3mm lower than the rear. That small rake shifts weight forward under braking and gives the front tyres something to bite with on corner entry.

Shock oil controls how quickly weight transfers. Thicker oil in the front slows the forward pitch and calms a car that darts into corners; thicker oil in the rear stops the back squatting and spinning up under power. Change one end at a time and run five laps between changes, or you will never know which change did what.

Spring rate sets how much the car rolls. Stiffer springs give faster response and less grip; softer springs give more grip and lazier steering. On loose dirt go softer, on high-grip carpet or tarmac go stiffer.

Droop is how far the suspension can extend. Less droop means less weight transfer and a more stable car on jumps. More droop lets the tyres follow rough ground. Finally, camber: around -1 degree at the rear and -1.5 at the front is a safe starting point for most touring and off-road cars.

Write every change in a notebook with the date, surface and lap time. Six months from now that notebook will be worth more than any upgrade part you can buy.
